This Soda Bread is a traditional Irish bread made from buttermilk, whole wheat flour and sometimes oats. It is very simple to make and does not require yeast or rising time. Moreover, no need to knead it!
As to my banana bread, soda bread was also one of my healthy breakfasts when I was at the University. It is a bread with 100% whole wheat flour and oat, so it is very very healthy. To make it even healthier, I liked to add some flaxseed, the result is perfect! It is very good in the morning with salted butter and some tea. It reminded me of memories of my university’s breakfast.
I offer this recipe because next Tuesday is Saint Patrick’s Day and I wanted to participate in this event by proposing an Irish recipe. Know that it is not because the blog is called Tasty and Frenchy that I would make only French recipes. I like cooking in general and I want to open up to the world with all these flavors.
The best thing about this bread is it’s one of the easiest bread to make. You don’t have to knead it for several minutes, and you don’t have to have a super mixing robot. Simply mix the dry ingredients and add the buttermilk and honey then mix a bit. Form a ball and in the oven. There is really nothing simpler! That’s also why I wanted very simple photos.

Description
Simple Irish bread with just 6 ingredients and no need to mix, no need to wait.
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup quick oats
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 tbsp flaxseed
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1/4 cup water
Instructions
- Preheat the oven at 400°F.
- Mix the flour, oats, baking soda, salt and flaxseeds. Add the buttermilk, honey and water. Knead just a little bit a-with your hands, form a ball. You can add some oats on top to decorate.
- With a knife make a cross. Place on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper and place in the oven for 40 minutes.
